How to Select a Contractor


Question: How do I make sure that I am getting the right contractor? What should I look for to help me make a decision?
Answer: Here's a checklist of things to look for when comparing contractors?
1. Check to make sure your contractor is licensed and review their complaint record.

3. Ask all Contractor's to provide proof of insurance for liability and workers compensation. Ask if you can be named a certificate holder before work begins. If your contractor cannot provide you with a certificate naming you additional insured, then they are not insured.
If they are not insured properly, you are liable for any and all damages and injuries that may occur on your property while work is taking place.

4. Ask all contractors for referrals. A contractor that satisfies customers should have a ready pool of previously satisfied customers willing to spend a few minutes on the phone relating their experience. Contact a couple of the customers and ask some questions such as;
A. Were employees and/or subcontractors courteous and professional?
B. Were the work areas and areas of the house leading to it adequately protected?
C. Did the contractor do what they promised when they promised it?
D. Did the contractor respond to concerns and calls in a timely manner?
E. Ask if they were clean and neat.
